David Rankine During magick, witches can call upon the energies of a particular animal to help them in their work. By placing a statue of a particular animal it allows us to focus and use visualisation. Animal energy is helpful in work for healing and protection (the work I do the most) and I have compiled a list of a few animals and their natural life instincts to help you choose a totem animal.

When you choose a totem animal you should study that animal’s natural behaviour by reading about them and if possible visiting their natural habitat.

Totems are not specific animals but mystical powers, seek Totem animals in the astral world, and imagine they are representations of our higher selves. In other words, power animals are chosen by their affinity to the person.

I use the Totem animals as advisers, using an animal for a specific kind of magick. Some animals are associated with the quarters and sometimes these energies are activated with quarter calls. If I seek wisdom in my work I will use the Owl, if I want to use protection and success I would call on the crab.

We can all have many totem animals, sometimes they come and go moving in and out of our lives very similar to that of spirit guides. Do not feel bad if your first animal moves on and is replaced with something that you wouldn’t want around in you on the physical plain. With most people on particular animal will stay with you all your life, it is often your favourite animal and you may even have similar characteristics!

To begin, work with one power animal at the time. Visit the animal in the astral world and communicate with it for a while and then move on to another.

Welcome those that come to you for the new experiences they will bring into your life. Bless and thanks to those that go.
